Bachelor Days Are Over

The San Francisco Film Society has presented several film cycles from around the world this fall, like Taiwan and Hong Kong, and will soon be showing several recent French films at French Cinema Now. There will be a variety of films shown- from family drama to comedy to coming of age story- but the one thing all the movies have in common is that they represent a sampling of what moviegoers in France have been seeing in theaters for the last year.

Chris Weitz, the director of The Golden Compass and New Moon, focuses on immigration in his most recent movie, A Better Life. Starring Mexican movie star Demian Bichir, best known to American audiences as Esteban Reyes in Showtime's Weeds, he portrays Carlos, a struggling father and illegal immigrant working hard to provide, yes, a better life for his son.

The Future by Miranda July

The San Francisco International Film Festival presents an impressive slate of films from around the globe between April 21st and May 5th at three venues around the city. These venues, it should be noted, are among the best places in San Francisco to watch movies: the Sundance Kabuki in Japantown, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the historic Castro Theater in the Castro District.
