Macy's

Macy's

San Francisco is an especially nice place to visit at Christmastime. The city skyline lights up at night, and there are plenty of sights to see during a casual daytrip.  A good place to start is Union Square, center of the city's retail shopping hub and home to a giant Christmas tree and an ice skating rink that is open until January 16th.

At the north end of Union Square, the Westin St. Francis is famous for its annual Gingerbread House display, which requires architecture skills as much as baking skills. And no, the house is not edible, but is just for your viewing pleasure. After checking out the famous gingerbread house, you can walk around the corner to Macy's, with its famous holiday SPCA windows. Each year Macy's places pets that need a home in its windows, and the annual display helps to raise much-needed money for the organization that supports animal welfare.

Further down Market Street, close to the Embarcadero, is the Hyatt Regency Hotel,  where the lobby is decorated with strands of lights, a tree and snowfall at 1pm, 6pm and 8pm. The hotel is located close to the Embarcadero BART station, so it is an easy spot for commuters. Also just around the corner from the Hyatt is the city's other ice skating rink, on Justin Herman Plaza. Here you can skate with a view of the Ferry Building and Embarcadero.

All in all, San Francisco has some wonderful sights and sounds for the holidays.
