West is West

The San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival starts 29th run on March 10th, with nearly 100 films, including documentaries and short films, along with special presentations and live events at venues around San Francisco, culminating in a closing night showing of "Surrogate Valentine" by Dave Boyle.

The opening night film is "West is West," a British film about a boy who relocates to Pakistan from Manchester, England; this highlights the international nature of the festival. The film takes place in England and Pakistan, whereas the closing night film was filmed partially in the Richmond and Sunset Districts of San Francisco. In between, movies from Iran, Vietnam, India, the Philippines and of course the U.S. will be shown. Gurinder Chadha, the director of "Bend it Like Beckham", will be spotlighted and interviewed via Skype. Live Events include Bollywood Under the Stars on the evening of the 12th in the Japantown Peace Plaza.

Festival Venues: Sundance Kabuki, Castro Theater, Clay Theater, Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley. San Jose March 10-20.
