Anchor Steam Brewery
There is nothing like a day of work, sightseeing or shopping to work up a thirst. Most of the time it is enough to head to one of the many local bars or just grab a beer out of the fridge. However if you are interested in a little history with your frosty malted beverage there is another option- and best of all it includes free beer. Yes you read it correctly, FREE BEER! The only catch is that it will require a little planning, as the Anchor Steam Brewery only offers two tours per weekday, and they are usually either late morning or early afternoon. Plus, they are usually reserved at least one month in advance.
Every Anchor Steam label says, “Made in San Francisco since 1896”, which was the year that a German brewer bought an old brewery on Pacific Street, which would be the first of six locations around the city. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century brewing method, when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. With a history involving the Gold Rush, the impact of the 1906 earthquake, an owner being killed after falling off a street car, Prohibition and an investment by the founder of Maytag, Anchor Steam Brewery is definitely a part of San Francisco.
In total, the tour takes about two hours, in which you and up to nine other friends get a history lesson and walking tour of the facility, which is then followed by a tasting of the chosen brews. For our session that included the Summer Ale, Anchor Steam’s signature beer, Liberty Ale, Humming, Anchor Porter and we finished up with the Old Foghorn Barley wine. This is a great out of the ordinary experience that is very San Francisco.
