Bay to Breakers
Sunday, May 15, marks the centennial running of the Bay to Breakers. If anything is unique to San Francisco, it's not the trolley cars or Fisherman's Wharf, it's Bay to Breakers.
The race has been run in May every year, since 1901. Beginning at the Embarcadero, on the eastern edge of the city, it winds through the center of San Francisco, and ends on the shores of Ocean Beach and the Great Highway on the western coast of the city. In the center of the race route, is the Hayes Street Hill, with a steep incline reaching up to Alamo Square, after which the race steadies and continues on a mostly flat route through Golden Gate Park.
Oh, but this isn't an ordinary footrace. Costumes are de rigeur, as is full nudity. People-watching is almost more of a sport here than the actual foot race. Bring your cameras and be sure to catch San Francisco's biggest annual street party.
