Fillmore Jazz Festival

One of my favorite street festivals of the summer is the Fillmore Jazz Festival, which welcomes around 90,000 guests each year. The Festival is a showcase of the diversity of San Francisco, featuring music, culture and cuisine set against the picturesque backdrop of Fillmore Street.

Billing itself as the largest free Jazz Festival on the West Coast, the 2010 Fillmore Jazz Festival is set for the July 4th weekend and runs from 10 am-6 pm Saturday July 3rd and Sunday July 4th on Fillmore Street between Jackson and Eddy Streets.

In the streets, there will be the standard booths selling everything from pictures of San Francisco to Utilikilts, as well as the standard street party food options from gyros, grilled corn on the cob to fried artichoke hearts. However, in contrast to many other festivals in the city, The Fillmore Jazz Festival does not require you to be in a cage “beer garden” to imbibe adult beverages. In fact, many of the local restaurants sell a variety of adult beverages and you can walk around, drink, and enjoy the music.

While the festival officially ends at 6 pm each day, there are a number of excellent restaurants and clubs that are excellent for continuing the revelry into the night. If you have not been to these venues: The Boom Boom Room, Rassela’s, or Yoshi's, a visit to any of them is highly recommended. Each venue has music scheduled for the Festival, such as The Boom Boom Room’s Jazzfest .The Fillmore Jazz Festival site has a complete calendar and further details.
