The Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the travel season, and for us in Northern California it normally marks the time when Highway 1 and the State Parks start to fill up with both locals and visitors hoping to appreciate the abundance of natural scenery that California has to offer.
This year the rains have continued a little longer than normal, and the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada Mountains promises to keep the scenery a little greener, the lakes a little more full, and the waterfalls flowing for the thousands of visitors to the parks.
One of the best ways to get away is to go camping. While for some this may mean solitary hikes up to secluded mountain peaks, for most this means reserving a spot in a park, loading up the family and driving out there. In California, one of the easiest ways to choose is to visit the California State Parks website, where you can learn about the options, attractions and even reserve space at one of nearly 15,000 campsites.
Just some of the activities available include rafting, horseback riding, hiking, surfing, mountain biking, fishing and much more. Make sure you check the weather, bring the right gear, and of course lots of food and drink to enjoy with your friends and family. Enjoy the summer ahead at the many California State Parks!
