9500 Liberty

People who are interested in the immigration debate, Latino issues, or who just like a good movie are in for a treat: there will be special screenings of the award-winning documentary "9500 Liberty" at the Elmwood in Berkeley and the Lumiere in San Francisco June 11-13, with the co-directors appearing at different screenings throughout the weekend.

The documentary- clocking in at just 81 minutes- brings you to bucolic Prince William County, Virginia in June of 2007 as it passes a resolution to check all suspected illegal immigrants for papers (sound familiar?). The documentary includes interviews with the proponents and opponents of the resolution, and footage of local government meetings, as the debate over the issue heats up and threatens to divide the community (the 9500 Liberty trailer is here). The film couldn't be more relevant, and should prompt some good discussions during the Q&A with the director afterwards. For a full list of Bay Area screenings, along with a list of which of the film's two co-directors, Eric Byler or Annabel Park, will be present at each screening, consult this very helpful 9500 Liberty site.
