The Maid
Sebastian Silva’s Sundance Festival hit, “The Maid” (La Nana), arrives in Bay Area theaters on Friday, November 13th.
This Chilean film, the winner of both Sundance’s Grand Jury prize and a special acting award from the world cinema jury for star Catalina Saavedra, provides a glimpse into the lonely, closed world of Raquel, the long-time maid for a well-to-do Santiago family.
Years of service to the Valdez family have taken their toll, both physical and emotional, and when Mrs. Valdez suggests hiring a second maid to help ease Raquel’s burden, Raquel senses a threat to her delicate role within the family, and declares war on the interlopers.
“The Maid” has the look and feel of a stark documentary: virtually no music on the soundtrack, grainy camerawork, and bleak colors. You will certainly not walk out of the theater with a smile on your face, but the two hours spent in the world of “The Maid” will leave you with an appreciation of a life lived in the shadows, one that rarely finds its way to the big screen.
Catalina Saavedra does a marvelous job giving life to a complicated, sad woman. Do yourself a favor and enter the world of “The Maid”.
