Caddyshack Live
One of the classic small theater finds in San Francisco is the Dark Room in the Mission District. With so much competition in the theater scene in San Francisco, there are choices from the many small local theaters to the larger theaters such as the Orpheum, which offers more nationally-recognized performances. You will not see "Wicked" or "Phantom of the Opera" at the Dark Room, but productions like "Caddyshack Live!" (for more last minute surprises keep an eye on the Dark Room's website).
The first time I visited the Dark Room was for a locally produced play about San Francisco icon Joseph Abraham Norton, called Emperor Norton. I purchased my tickets through their site and Brown Paper Tickets, which has very reasonable ticket processing fees in the $1 range (instead of dealing with Ticketmaster and their numerous ways of adding fees for everything from a processing fee to a convenience fee for using your own paper and ink to print your tickets).
When I walked in to pick up my tickets, there was a nice couple that was obviously a little more used to assigned seating, snack bars and table service, and most likely not accustomed to this area of the Mission. When they asked about snacks, the person at the door pointed across the street to a small liquor store and noted it as their snack bar. In other words- grab a burrito beforehand at Taqueria Cancun, walk next door and pick up the snack of your choice, and head on over to this cozy theater. Not being equipped with a large stage or a major crew keeps the productions reliant on the performers and sometimes the audience and is both inexpensive and entertaining.
There are ongoing events such as bad movie night, which for the month of March features a different Patrick Swayze movie each Sunday, where the crowd can participate. The next play that is opening at the Dark Room is Caddyshack Live, which, just as it sounds, is loosely based on the classic movie featuring Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and of course the Gopher. The show opened Friday March 20th at 8 pm, and based on the production's trailer, it looks promising.Tickets are only $20, and this should prove to be a very interesting event.
