If you have been driving near AT&T park recently it would be hard for you not to notice the giant blue and gold tent that appeared in November. For those of you who have been wondering what type of circus is coming to town this is for you.
Most of those who have even a limited interest in performing arts, read the paper once in awhile or happen to flip on the local news the answer is obvious; Cirque du Soleil has arrived with their new show.
I'm sure there are still some out there who have never been to a show or turned down an invitation (stereotypically this may be a guy like me who would be happy watching a hockey game in a sports bar) and I'm here to offer you some other reasons to be interested.
- The show is spectacular, Varied music and acrobatic feats that will astound you.
- It is not too long, or at least doesn't seem like it
- There is a bar, and while it is ballpark prices, it is at least quality beer. And of course there is the wine option as well for a more sophisticated date.
- This is guaranteed bonus points for you in the eyes of your date or significant other.
Look, she wants to go and most likely will ask you anyways so take the initiative and invite her to this show. For women, as a guy who is personally too involved in sporting activities, this is also a good way to introduce your current or future guy to the world of performing arts in a way that is guaranteed to keep him entertained. If there are still doubts, have a look at the trailer for the show at the Cirque du Soleil website.
About the show from the Cirque du Soleil website:
OVO is a headlong rush into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects' home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion.
When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives.
It’s love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.
OVO is overflowing with contrasts. The hidden, secret world at our feet is revealed as tender and torrid, noisy and quiet, peaceful and chaotic. And as the sun rises on a bright new day the vibrant cycle of insect life begins anew.
My simplified version for novices and some quick tips.
Pick up your date, and either drive (parking is $20 but right next to the tent), or take some other form of public transportation and try to arrive about 30 minutes early to give yourself some time to relax with the adult beverage of your choice. It can be relatively chilly inside at first until the tent starts to fill up so a good time to cozy up to one another or at least be prepared (guys) to offer her your jacket (bring one). While there are some obstructions from time to time due to it being a large tent and needing to be held up, there isn't a bad seat in the house and there is constant activity either on the stage or in the crowd.
The show itself involves a ringmaster who tries to control the action, bright and varied costumes for the numerous performers, a varied musical selection, and some amazing athletic displays that vary from "that looks like it would be fun" to "how can they do that."
The show is running in the bay area until late February 2010, however since the show that I attended on a rainy Thursday was sold out, I recommend planning ahead.
San Francisco: November 24,2009 - January 24, 2010
San Jose: February 4, 2010 -February 21, 2010
