Moya Angela as Effie White in Dreamgirls
At The Curran Theater from August 24th to September 26th, the Broadway revival of "Dreamgirls" will knock your socks off. Frequent, dazzling costume changes, a state of the art LCD screen illuminating dance numbers, and of course powerful voices from every cast member all contribute to a fine performance. The story of The Dreams, an African-American girl group's rise to success in the 1960's, paralleling that of a certain group lead by Diana Ross, is expertly staged and acted. This production is here for a limited time- get your tickets while you can.
Anyone already familiar with the musical or movie will attend the performance hoping for a bravura showing by whomever plays "Effie White". You will not be disappointed. As the most talented member of the group who is demoted from lead vocal to background for being a little too thick and a little too black, Effie is a character to remember. Newcomer Moya Angela plays her with conviction, and the song that closes the first act, "And I Am Telling You (I'm Not Going)", is beautifully done. Nevertheless, this is an ensemble production, and from the bit players to the other lead characters, including former American Idol standout Syesha Mercado as Deena Jones, everyone shines, acting as well as they can sing.
The production, which includes a 15 minute intermission, is nearly 3 hours long, so plan accordingly. The Curran Theater is in the heart of the theater district. Pre or post performance, we recommend eating at Espetus Churrascaria or Il Borgo.
