Palenke
For those of you starting to think about the weekend here is an event that you should definitely consider. Full of top talent from the Bay Area as well as Los Angeles, Manicato, Palenke Soultribe and Funky C & Joya offer up a music and dance filled evening at the Elbo Roomon Friday, April 2nd.
First, a little bit about Manicato: Founded in SF's Mission district in 2004 by Israel Matos, Manicato has found a way to combine its social and musical influences into a form of intelligent dance music that feeds both body and mind. The word Manicato, derived from the Native People of Puerto Rico known as The Taino, means a bold and valiant person of a good heart. The band Manicato lives up to this Taino ideal with it's socially conscious lyrics backed by a mixture of Salsa, Timba, Reggae, Hip Hop, and Rock .
Palenke Soultribe was created in Los Angeles in 2005 by Colombian producers Juan D. Borda (AKA Insectosound) and Andres Erazo ( AKA Popa) and later joined by drummer/percussionist A. Zuluaga. They have taken electronic music to new heights by deconstructing Afro-Colombian rhythms and blending them with underground beats and synthesizer sounds. Palenke Soultribe (PST) represents the new generation of Colombian musicians ready to break all the rules. Seeing these two groups live should be a blast. Don't miss it!
