Shattuck Down Low

Shattuck Down Low

There is a real nice spot right on Shattuck (2284 Shattuck) in downtown Berkeley that’s great to see live music and dance, dance, dance. I am referring to the Shattuck Down Low, a dimly lit venue that always has quality music, and serves Red Stripe, which is always a bonus.

Shattuck Down Low is best known for three kinds of music: deep Reggae, classic Hip Hop, and Latin dance music. Sundays is the day for Reggae at “Kings of Kings”, the cover is $5 and the music and vibe are excellent. As for hip hop shows, recent acts passing through the Bay Area and making a stop at the Shattuck Down Low have included KRS-ONE, Dead Prez and Mos Def. What else could you ask for?

And then there is Latin dance night on Wednesdays, with Live Salsa Bands. It’s an intimate setting, perfect for watching the band while you rest, and the dancing scene is lively on the wooden 20x40 dance floor. I have been to a number of Brazilian events at the Down Low as well, and the place was packed with… Brazilians. Check their calendar for upcoming shows, come on out and get down!
