DJ Roger Mas
DJ Roger Más is just good plain fun. Excellent taste, musical knowledge and a deep passion for Latin music- especially Cumbia and its derivatives – make any night dancing to his sessions a memorable one. Just the other night I caught him at the famous ‘El Superritmo” night he does at the Elbo Room with Kool Kyle, and he played a Sonidero remix (The Mexican style where classic songs are remixed by dropping the pitch, giving them a delicious, ‘you’ve been drinking NyQuil but you have to move your butt’ feeling) of the Colombian “Descarga del Bigoton”, as the crowd moved and slinked to the slicing guiro and deep bass. Bliss.
Roger Más has a show on 90.7 KALX in Berkeley, and beyond his famous Saturday Nights at The Make-Out Room, also spins at Skylark in the Mission District and The Missouri Lounge in Berkeley. He has released a number of well received remix singles (on Vinyl) on Club Unicornio Records that sell well in Europe and Australia, always a good sign. As one writer describes his work on his latest 45 rpm : “Roger works the Cumbia percussion breakdown perfectly, which makes the track great for a segue from Hip-Hop to Cumbia or from Cumbia to something else.” His Club nights are similar, as he moves from Classic Reggae to Classic Cumbia to a Bouncy Bomba.
Check out a Q & A with Roger Más in the SF Weekly. The fame of El Superritmo is well deserved – He and Kool Kyle are excellent DJs. Come out to see Roger Más spin, you won’t stop dancing all night.
