Little Baobab, at 19th St. off of Mission, is the sister venue to the bigger Bissap Baobab. The latter is a full service restaurant, while the former is a smaller place that is primarily for drinking and dancing. And for a fun night out in the Mission, Little Baobab really stands out. Other places may be pumping the latest Top 40 hits, but Little Baobab plays African beats all night.
The drink menu, in addition to serving up domestic and international beers, features a unique cocktail list. I enjoyed the Tatu, a hibiscus margarita, and you can also enjoy drinks like a banana margarita and a ginger orange whiskey. Drinks are served all night, and the DJ starts spinning, er, manning the Macbook at 10:00. The tunes are mostly African, and the beats are very danceable. The crowd is young and unpretentious- people who like dancing and don't care what they look like doing it. The space is small, so you will work up quite a sweat. Also, I've arrived before 10 and haven't had to pay a cover to get in, but I know that there is a cover, and there can be a long wait to get in after 11:00 or so. Nevertheless, it's worth getting inside and dancing to African beats and enjoying some really tasty cocktails.
