Coffee Bar
Hidden away in the Mission District, in the area with the streets named for states, lies one of the most perfect coffee shops in the city, Coffee Bar. The reason that it is perfect has a lot to do with the fact that they not only serve excellent coffee, but also adult beverages as well as lunch and dinner.
For this article, my focus is on the drink portion and will have limited mention of the brioche breakfast sandwich and ridiculously good pastries (including a chocolate spice donut that is a big hit with our team). On the corner of Mariposa and Florida streets, at the base of a complex of refurbished live/work lofts, is this airy, industrial cafe. There is a patio outside for those sunny days that are common in the Mission District, and on a nice day there will be individuals, couples, families and of course dogs on the patio. Inside is another story. While relatively tranquil and spacious in the early morning, by about 10:00 a.m., the café is abuzz with the sounds of the staff’s musical selection and the sounds of many fingers anxiously tapping on keyboards.
Who they are, where they are from, and what they are doing may remain a mystery, but somehow in San Francisco every café has multitudes of people “working” from cafes during the day. The Coffee Bar, with its ample seating, lots of outlets, great drink selection and of course free Wi-Fi, is a center for the daytime café worker crowd. One note for those of you planning on working there during lunch…. please make way for the patrons who purchase more than just one cup of coffee for 4 hours.
The staff is very cordial and the selection of quality beverages is wide ranging. In the morning stop by for some coffee, tea, or my favorite, the hot chocolate, made with real chocolate chunks and complete with milk poured on top to create different designs. Later in the day you can continue with more caffeine if need be, however Coffee Bar has a good selection of beer and wine that can accompany any meal.
One of the highlights is when they have food & wine pairings along with a DJ at the Africa Free Radio Kitchen. One of the past events was a springtime menu featuring tomatoes, wine and of course a screening of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, so keep an eye out for other upcoming events.
