Comstock Saloon in North Beach
Ever since opening in early 2010, Comstock Saloon in North Beach has received many accolades, including being named one of 25 Best Cocktail Bars in GQ Magazine that same year; in May 2011, Esquire called it one of the best bars in America.
And although there are extensive spirits on tap, along with wine and beer, Comstock is known for its house cocktails.
I recently had the Pisco Punch, which was similar to a Pisco Sour, except more citrusy and without the foaminess of a Pisco Sour. The drink was expertly mixed and left me thirsting for more. My friends ordered Manhattans, which were also expertly made. The service was friendly but casual, and there was a wait time while our drinks were made. However, this gave us time to appreciate the unique surroundings of the Saloon. There is a piano player perched at the top of the stairs, playing old-timey tunes, and the bar uses an antiquated cooling system that hangs from the celing (visible in the image at left), like giant paddles in the air. The bar has an overall friendly, unpretentious vibe, and is a good place to go for a cocktail if you are in the Financial District or North Beach.
