Elixir

Elixir

Located on 16th St. between Guerrero and Valencia, Elixir has the ideal location for a night of barhopping in the Mission. But you may want to arrive early and stay awhile- Elixir has great drinks at great prices, and a fun, interesting clientele that crowds the bar as it gets later and later. Plus, Elixir has a long history that most casual visitors have no idea about.

Elixir was restored in 2003 by current owner H. Joseph Ehrmann, but some form of saloon/bar has been on the site since 1858. The bar served thirsty gold prospectors over nearly 150 years ago, and today it is owned by an award-winning bartender. When I say award-winning, I mean Ehrmann was named 2010 Bartender of the Year by Nightclub Magazine. In 2009, the bar was among the Top 100 Bars in Food and Wine Magazine's 2009 Cocktail Book, and GQ has listed it as the #4 bar in the country.

So why all these accolades? Creative, delicious cocktails, for one thing. The menu changes constantly, but some current "summer offerings"include Strawberry Days (Square One botanical spirit plus strawberries) and Peppermelon (Right Gin with Black Pepper Honey syrup and muddled watermelon). Elixir also has a full menu of green cocktails; it is actually the first and only Certified Green Bar in America.

Owner H. Joseph Ehrmann can be seen here mixing up a delicious blueberry drink on ABC 7's "The View from the Bay". So what are you waiting for? Start your evening at Elixir, or better yet, spend the whole evening there.
