Tonga Room

Hidden on Nob Hill, below the lobby of the Fairmont Hotel, down a long hallway, you'll find The Tonga Room, one of San Francisco's most historic bars. Established in 1945, the Tonga Room has been a destination for both San Francisco natives and tourists alike for years. Though the bar was threatened with closure in recent years, it is still going strong, serving up South Pacific-themed food and cocktails Wednesdays through Sundays.

The Terrace Level of the Fairmont originally started out as a 75 foot swimming pool in 1929. It was in 1945 that MGM's lead set director, Mel Melvin, was hired to turn the pool area into what is now the Tonga Room. The pool became what is now the lagoon that is at the center of the Tonga Room, where a floating stage used to hold an orchestra that entertained guests every evening. This stage is now home to a DJ that plays "island" classics such as "You can call me Al", "I just called to say I love you", and of course, "Sailing". Your evening is always complete with music by Christopher Cross!

In addition to the history, the Polynesian decor, and the awesome tunes, the Tonga Room offers a wide array of drinks. You can order beer, wine, and all sorts of hard liquor, but it is the mixed drinks that the Tonga Room is known for. Prices can be a bit steep, but know that you will definitely get your money's worth with one solid mai tai or daiquiri.  Or three.

If you can embrace the tourist factor, you must visit the Tonga Room and soak up the faux Polynesian ambience. It's a unique San Francisco experience.
