Herradura Tequila

Herradura Tequila

San Francisco is blessed with hundreds of options for Mexican food and hundreds of bars with bartenders who work hard and aare ble to make a fine margarita. However, for those tequila aficionados there is one place that stands apart: Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant. Having spent a couple of years living in the Richmond district of San Francisco, I know it can seem far removed from city life and at times a little dreary. My favorite bar was Tommy’s Mexican restaurant, which we referred to as home of the $50 burrito. Not because the food was expensive, but more a reference to the bar tab for tequila and margaritas that would accompany the cost of food.

While the food is tasty and a great value, the real reason most patrons are there is for the tequila. Behind the bar is Julio Bermejo, who has been chronicled in CNN and the Wall Street Journal as one of the world’s most knowledgeable resources for tequila. The bar area is relatively small, and gets progressively more full as the weekend approaches. Whether you decide to sit at a table and order dinner or hang out by the bar, a great way to start are the free chips and salsa while you order the freshest margarita available in the city: fresh limes, agave nectar and 100% agave tequila. And don’t even think about asking for Cuervo Gold. There are hundreds of tequilas to choose from, and this is a great opportunity to try the different aromas and flavors of various tequila brands, like Herradura, El Tesoro, Partida and many others, along with different styles like silver, reposado, and añejo. It is easy to be intimidated by the large selection, but the staff and especially Julio himself (if he is behind the bar on the night you arrive) are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. A key word of advice when including Tommy’s into your evening plans is to take a cab, as the tequila will flow and parking can be difficult. Salud!!!!
