La Fonda: Tapas Mexican Style

When I hear of a tapas restaurant I imagine ordering a small plate of Serrano chesse with “carnes frias” (cold meats) and delicious olives… to drink, sangria of course! La Fonda on Solano, in Albany, has turned the flavors into a more Mexian/Californian style. For instance, steamed sweet white corn with queso cotija, chili arbol, aioli and lime, or duck tacos with guacamole and arbol chilli salsa!

Pican: Cajun Cooking in Oakland

If you happen to be in Oakland or need an excuse to go, this is it. Last week some friends suggested a restaurant called Pican in Oakland for dinner and drinks. My initial reaction was less than accomodating as 1. it was not in San Francisco and 2. it sounded like it was named after a nut, so my thoughts immediately went to vegetarian cuisine topped with pecans. However, I decided to check “the google” and found that it was actually a restaurant that specialized in “California-infused Southern Cuisine”, and I became immediately interested.

While there are many Mexican restaurants in the East Bay, Picante is the best choice for families with kids any age. They are located in Berkeley on 6th street. Picante offers original Mexican cuisine and a clean and somewhat loud environment with music playing and people constantly walking by your table- you don’t have to worry about your toddler screaming bloody murder in the middle of the restaurant! You can also enjoy delicious food including soups, mole and carne asada plates with fresh ingredients and very fast service.  Food is served very fast, usually within 3-6 minutes after ordering!
