Tapas
The idea of tapas, just as with any dish native to any land, has been reinterpreted and reduced to simply mean "small plate". Maybe the words "snack" or "appetizer" are not enough- remember, dear reader, that English is not my first language- to define the small dish in question here. Tapas are not always "small plates" in Spain, where we also have the "pincho" as a sort of "mini tapa" and then the humble tapa. Keeping this in mind, it is very common to find restaurants in San Francisco whose specialty is "tapas" or that include "tapas" on the menu. One of the restaurants that offers this "small portion" style of tapas is Andalu.
I'll clarify that the Andalu menu includes a section of innovative tapas that have little to do with traditional Spanish cuisine (if you want more traditional Spanish food, go a little further down 16th St. to Picaro). Calvin Schneiter, chef and owner of Andalu, must have seen something in tapas as a good business model. Mr. Schneiter, who previously worked at Foreign Cinema and Boulevard, was once a financial analyst at Capital One Financial.
Andalu offers brunch on the weekends, while on Tuesdays, I recommend the one dollar tuna tacos; that is truly a Happy Hour!
