Mi Pueblo
Where to eat in the San Francisco Bay Area? Once you have spent most of your paycheck on the various delicacies the City has to offer, it’s time for a home cooked meal. What’s that you say, you don’t have the time to cook the beans, season the carne asada, and make tortillas a mano? Never fear, for like a huge Chicano superhero in the form of a Mexican supermarket,Mi Pueblo stores are here!
I know Mi Pueblo from the massive building on High street in Oakland that opened a few years back, but there are seventeen (!) stores in the Bay Area now, and a new one just opened in San Rafael. You need to go especially to check out the deli sections – massive glass cases of Mexican deliciousness. The butcher's displays are clean and go on and on. In the bakery section there is pan dulce for days. The frutas and verduras are good – real good. There are even various creams and lotions for sale.
But for me the best part is the roasted chickens they sell outside, which kick the butt of comparable pollo sold at Lucky or Safeway. The Mi Pueblo roasted pollo has a smoky, cooked on woodfire taste that is literally finger-licking good.
Go home with Mi Pueblo!
