Recently opened on 2944 16th St. between South Van Ness and Mission,Chile Lindo serves one thing and one thing only: delicious empanadas, Chilean-style. If you're like me, you're not familiar with Chilean cuisine or what makes it different from other Latin American cuisines. A visit to Chile Lindo is a good introduction for those who don't know just how good Chilean food can be.
The typical Chilean empanada, or meat pie, is based on a filling called "pino", made with meat, raisins, egg, and whole black olives. The result is a hearty and delicious empanada. The spices and the raisins give a Middle Eastern touch to the empanada, and it reminded me of meat pies prepared in my Lebanese home. One empanada was filling enough for lunch, and there is a very short wait time while the empanada is freshly baked in the store. There are also vegetarian options in addition to the classic pino.
The owner of Chile Lindo, Paula Tejeda, sells her empanadas at various bars and clubs in the Mission on the weekends- specifically, the Latin American Club & The Makeout Room between 7-8 on Fridays. To follow her throughout the city, visit her Twitter page. We think that, besides being an ideal lunch, an empanada from Chile Lindo would be the perfect late-night snack after a long night out at the bars!
