La Taqueria
The age old question of which taqueria is one that will probably never have a definitive answer and will inevitably come down to personal choice. From chains such as Chipotle, to taquerias who put carrots and peas in their rice (inexcusable) there are options for everyone. Much of this may depend on which is closest, cost effective, or your order.
If you want a Scallop Fish taco, you’re probably limited to The Flying Fish Grill in Half Moon Bay, which I definitely recommend for after a long surf session near Half Moon Bay.
However for the purposes of this article I have chosen two that I can definitely recommend nearby in the Mission district.
One of those that always rank highly in local rankings and rather importantly number one in the mind of my girlfriend is La Taqueria. Located at 2889 Mission Street between 25th and 26th streets this conveniently located Taqueria is clean with excellent guacamole, carne asada tacos and consistently good quality. I do agree that the meal that I have had there, which in general means a carne asada burrito have been solid. However I have not been swayed from my number one choice for over 10 years in San Francisco, Taqueria Cancun.

Taqueria Cancun
With three locations in San Francisco, I have been a prophet of the 2288 Mission Street location between 18th and 19th streets. My list of converts continues to get longer from every introduction (with the exception of my girlfriend) and has grown to be the official taqueria for my company Alcance Media Group. Surprisingly I was actually introduced to Taqueria Cancun by a friend who swore by their vegetarian burrito. A strict carnivore I of course went right for the Carne Asada Super Burrito of which has been a staple ever since. Throw in a wet burrito, fajitas, grilled onions for a little variety as well as the more than occasional Negro Modelo, this is number one in my mind as well as a perennial number one in other local publications.
For example from experience, I know that the trip from Salt Lake City airport to Taqueria Cancun can be done in 8 hours if you are really hungry for a burrito and possibly don’t look at your speedometer.
It is open late for a great stop before, during, or after a night out in the Mission/ Valencia area. When busy, the staff is still friendly, fast, and top
Their salsa is freshly made and definitely packs a kick. If you can take it, make sure to ask for some extra and enjoy your meal with the free chips and of course an icy cold Negro Modelo or frosty beverage of your choice.
Taquerias are one of the best, most inexpensive, and most competitive of the restaurant options in San Francisco. Each one comes with its staunch supporters, however if you are ever in the neighborhood and are looking for a good option, check out one of these taquerias and of course compare to your traditional favorite.
