Il Borgo

Il Borgo

First off, I'll state that the review that follows was in no way influenced by the owner of Il Borgo asking me, after I ordered,"Sei italiano?" It seems as though my pronunciation and Mediterranean look threw him. Of course this doesn't happen when I order in English...

Il Borgo, located in Hayes Valley, is an Italian restaurant that makes you feel like you're in a private home. It's small and the tables are close together, so it's a good idea to call ahead and make a reservation. The dishes are typically Italian (those of you who've read some of my previous reviews on this site know how I feel about fusion food), and the portions are quite generous; most meals are accompanied by a side dish. Proof of the generous portions: diners frequently leaving with doggie bags filled with leftovers.

Since, as I mentioned, the dishes are typically Italian, I won't bother making specific recommendations. The food is simple and good; it's nothing fancy served on an enormous plate that you need a magnifying glass to see. What you can't miss is the tiramisu. At some restaurants I feel like skipping dinner and ordering desserts twice. This is one of those places. Bocatto di Cardinale!

Lastly: this is a cash-only restaurant, although there's an ATM on the premises.
