La Traviata

La Traviata

For someone from a Mediterannean country, the closest you can get to home-cooked food here in San Francisco is finding a good Italian restaurant. I've already reviewed good Italian restaurants outside of North Beach like Il Borgo in Hayes Valley. In the Mission, it's La Traviata.

The decor at La Traviata is dark and welcoming. You'll see the typical framed pictures of singers (some Italian, some not) and scenes from famous operas- but don't worry, there is no opera playing in the background while you eat. Although there are not many waiters, the ones who work there are efficient and attentive, and can make good recommendations for everyone at the table, beyond the specials of the day.

If you're served fresh baked bread when you arrive, you're in luck- the rest of your meal will be just as delicious as the three types of bread baked daily at the restaurant. The menu has a very wide selection, larger than what you would find at most Italian restaurants. After all, it can't all be pizza and pasta.

Recommendations? I like the salmon, eggplant and sea bass, but there is truly something for everyone among the choices of appetizers, pasta, fish, chicken, and veal on the menu. And for dessert? An amazing tiramisu.
