La Victoria
The day before Three Kings Day, (the Feast of the Epiphany is celebrated on January 6th), I went to 24th St in the Mission. I've found out after two years living in San Francisco after moving from Spain, that Mexicans also celebrate this holiday, and they also have kept the Spanish tradition of eating the Three Kings cake. This is a tradition that dates back to the Romans and was later adopted by Christians. The Three Kings themselves still resist wearing a certain red suit invented by Coca-Cola ;-)
After trying at three other bakeries- in some I was told that I had to order the cake ahead of time- I found La Victoria, a bakery that sells mouthwatering treats. The problem of finding a Three Kings cake was solved- there were plenty here. Furthermore, they had samples, so I could find out ahead of time that I had not gone wrong in choosing La Victoria. I even ate one right there in the bakery. I left pleased, and for almost seven dollars I took home an enormous plate of food that would have cost twice as much anywhere else in the city.
It's unusual for me to venture beyond Taqueria Cancun- as any well-informed person knows, the best taqueria in San Francisco- since I live around 14th St., but now I have another excuse to go down there. Especially on January 5th...
