Little Star Pizza

Little Star Pizza

We've already looked at some great Italian restaurants in the Mission, like La Traviata. Now, I'll look at a great pizzeria where the term "Italian food" loses some of its meaning: Little Star Pizza, authentic Chicago-style pizza in San Francisco. Little Star Pizza currently has two locations, one on Valencia- which I'll review here- on the corner of 15th St., and the other on Divisadero St.

I should start by saying that none of the two restaurants takes reservations, and the Mission location is always full. Add to your wait time for a table the time it takes to make your pizza: around 25 minutes for deep . dish (the famous Chicago style) and 12 minutes for thin crust.

For appetizer, I'll be very frank: although you have the option of ordering garlic bread, Caprese salad, or chicken wings, the only real choice, if you want to enjoy your pizza and not die of indigestion, is the mixed salad. Then it's time to move on to the pizza. There aren't really many options on the menu: it's pizza or pizza. As I mentioned before, it all comes down to whether you want deep dish or thin crust.

For the deep dish pizza, the ingredients aren't listed like in most pizzerias: first the cheese, then the toppings, and the sauce is last. The best of these, in my opinion, is the Classic (sausage, mushrooms, onion, and green peppers). There are other choices, like the Mediterrannean chicken (chicken breast, artichoke hearts, red pepper, green olives, onion and feta cheese), the vegetarian, or the Little Star (spinach, mixed with ricotta and feta, mushrooms, onion and garlic). And of course, you can create your own pizza with any topping you like.

You can also order, if your stomach can't handle the deep dish, the thin crust pizza. In addition to the Classic, with the same ingredients previously mentioned, there's the chicken with pesto or the Italian combo (pepperoni, salami, onion, green pepper, black olives, and pepperoncini).

Dessert? If you've left room for dessert, you can try the homemade cheesecake or the always popular gelato.

And a last bit of good news for people always in a hurry or for those who prefer eating at home: you can always order the pizza and pick it up for takeout.
