Mexico D.F.

On a street with many exciting restaurant options, Mexico D.F. offers good Mexican food in a beautiful setting. Nestled on Steuart Street, just steps from Market Street, Justin Herman Plaza and the Ferry Building, the restaurant is small and stylish, with careful attention paid to every detail, from the plates to lights to curtains.  This same care for quality and detail extends to the food and drink, which are all delicious.

Mexico D.F. is definitely not a place to order a burrito or nachos.  The food is true to the city that gives the restaurant its name- authentic Mexico City fare.  So the menu includes tacos de lengua- yes, that is tongue tacos, and they are tasty- along with huaraches (a thick tortilla in the shape of a sandal, topped with meat, beans and veggies), and chiles rellenos, among many other specialties.  The chef clearly isn't afraid to mix in different elements to the traditional recipes, so you get queso fundido (melted cheese, to be eaten with tortilla chips), but made with Spanish manchego cheese, and flautas (like crispy tacos) made with duck meat.  Everything is perfectly cooked, from the meats to the sauces.

The drinks don't disappoint, either.  Tequila is brought out in a "Mexican flag" trio of shots- tequila representing the white, tomato juice as red, and lime juice as the green- and the margaritas are made just right.  We didn't order dessert, but everything about the meal, from appetizers, to the main courses, to the drinks, was perfect. Like being in an upscale Mexico City restaurant, minus the airfare.
