Mr. Pickles
Consider me a sandwich convert. For lunch, I crave soup, salad, maybe a burrito or taco, but rarely a sandwich. Yet the sandwiches at Mr. Pickles in the Mission are so delicious, I crave them. So do a lot of people. Voted Best Sandwich 2009 by readers of the SF Bay Guardian and honored with a visit by Anthony Bourdain during his San Francisco visit for "No Reservations", Mr. Pickles is an established spot for cheap, filling and delicious sandwiches in a variety of combos.
There are 20 specialty sandwiches, from your classic meatball sandwich, to the veggie sandwich, a hot pastrami, and the Porky Pig (ham and bacon with American cheese). I am partial to the Slickster, with hot turkey and cranberry on sourdough. The bread is always crispy, and the meat is delicious. Mr. Pickles doesn't scrimp on cold cuts- rather, you get your money's worth, with loads of meat, along with all the fixings. Prices range from $5.50-$7.50.
Open 7 days a week, Mr. Pickles is located at 3380 20th St, between Van Ness & Shotwell. If you don't live in the area, it is well worth a trip- but DO keep in mind that only cash is accepted (there is an ATM inside). You'll recognize the place by the smiling Señor Pickle greeting you out on the sidewalk.
