Pica Pica

I have to admit that this was the first time I had tried Venezuelan food. Pica Pica in the Mission (there's another in Napa) gave me the opportunity to try this new variety of fast food in the neighborhood. It is without a doubt a great alternative to the sandwiches at Pícaro or the burritos at Cancún- good food at very reasonable prices.

Arepa and cachapa are new terms to add to your culinary vocabulary. At Pica Pica you can enjoy an arepa (grilled cornmeal cake) filled with chicken salad and avocado or a Pabellón (skirt steak with tostones and black bean sauce), or an achapa (sweet corn cake) filled with salted white cheese. There's also the maize'wich (grilled cheese over sweet cornbread) or the perico (scrambled eggs with tomato and onion). And to snack on, there's always friend yucca.
