Fake chicken at Shangri-La Restaurant

Fake chicken at Shangri-La Restaurant

The best Mongolian beef I have ever had was at Shangri-La Restaurant, and everything on the menu is vegetarian. I'm not usually a fan of fake meat—I say, if you're going to eat vegetarian food, eat vegetables. But the "meat" dishes that make up most of the menu at Shangri-La are cooked to perfection and well-seasoned. You'd think it was the real thing.

There are many Chinese restaurants in the Sunset, but Shangri-La stands out for two reasons: one, it is vegetarian, and two, the menu bears a sticker proudly stating that the restaurant is kosher-approved the Orthodox Rabbinical Council of San Francisco. The menu is extensive, with just about every kind of Chinese food imaginable, including some curries. As mentioned above, there are many fake meat dishes, made with either tofu or seitan, and they taste better than the real thing.

The restaurant itself is small, but the service is attentive, and the food is affordable- you easily can share several plates with friends without going over $30. This hidden gem is truly a Shangri-La, located in the Outer Sunset District.
