Tartine Bakery

Tartine Bakery in the Mission always has a long line snaking out the door, and for good reason: the baked goods and coffee here are without comparison. Not only is the food great and the prices reasonable, but Tartine has an ideal location, right on the corner of Guerrero and 18th St., and just a hop, skip and a jump from Dolores Park. Grab a warm muffin at Tartine and stake out a spot on the grass at Dolores for some great people watching and a great, lazy Sunday afternoon.

But first, a bit about Tartine: with pastries and bread this delicious, it is no wonder that head chefs, husband and wife Chad Robertson and Elisabeth Prueitt won the James Beard Award in 2008. The James Beard Award is given annually to the chef (or chefs) considered to be the best in America; it's like the Pulitzer or the Academy Award of the culinary world. Although the restaurant is open all day, selections tend toward the lighter side, with pressed sandwiches, salads, and of course, the freshly baked bread and pastries that Tartine is known for (see picture at left for a sample). The pastries are the quality that one would expect in France- pleasing to the eye and delicious. And the bread is crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, perfection. I could eat it for dessert.

As I said, there is usually a line, and it is filled with people who either know how good the food and hot beverages are at Tartine, or just happened to walk by and catch the scent of freshly baked bread. Much more information is on the Tartine website. Enjoy!
