The Plant Cafe

The Plant Cafe is proof that healthy food doesn't always mean rice cakes, celery, and food that tastes like cardboard. I first walked into the Marina District location not realizing that it specialized in healthy, organic fare, and found myself raving about a soup and sandwich combo that was the perfect, filling, tasty lunch. Whether you're making an effort to eat organic, sustainable food,or just want a break from the typical lunch food, try The Plant Cafe.

The Plant Cafe just recently oped its third restaurant downtown, and its second is located on the Embarcadero, just a stone's throw from the Ferry Building and Justin Herman Plaza.  I can't speak to the menus at the two newest restaurants, but having eaten at the Marina location, I can say that the lunch here is always flavorful and delicious. A word of warning: the prices can be a bit high ($10 for a sandwich or panini) for those trying to eat lunch on a budget.& Nevertheless, the portions are substantial (not Cheesecake Factory substantial; just enough), and the food is satisfying and healthy. The restaurant is committed to using only organic, sustainable and local produce, and you can taste the difference.

The salads include options like Roasted beet and Avocado and Grapefruit; the panini section of the menu includes Grilled Eggplant and Mango Lime Chicken; and sandwiches include a Roasted Chicken Pesto and Open Faced Crab Cake. What's more, all sandwiches, paninis and burgers come with a side salad (no fries). And don't forget to order a juice (like Fennel Apple) or smoothie (like Strawberry Mojito).

It's also worth noting that the service at Plant Cafe is always warm and friendly, which is not always the case in this city.
