Tlaloc
We here at CiuSF love authentic Mexican food, and are pleased that we have finally found it in the lunchtime desert that is the Financial District. Nestled across from Mixt Greens on Commercial Street, a wide alley off of Sansome Street, Tlaloc could be easily missed by passersby looking for other restaurants in the area. Yet with plenty of patio seating outside, as well as seating on THREE STORIES inside (first floor, mezzanine and balcony, Tlaloc has the space- you just have to choose among the many choices on the extensive menu.
Tlaloc has a large selection of burritos, tacos, enchiladas, and typical Mexican fare, but much of it is authentic. You can order a burrito de nopales- that is, a burrito with strips of sweet cactus- or a mole taco or mole burrito. Mole is a thick, fragrant sauce that usually accompanies chicken, and can be prepared in a varity of ways (black, yellow, green, or red, among others). The mole is delicious at Tlaloc, and the mole taco is to die for- all tender cuts of chicken slathered in onions and black mole, topped on two soft tortillas.
Also worth trying are the many salsas at the salsa bar. At Tlaloc, you can choose between avocado, mango, pumpkin seed, and tomatillo salsa, among others. And the agua de horchata, a milky rice drink, is excellent- sprinkled with cinnamon on top. For an out of the ordinary lunch in the Financial District, you must try Tlaloc.
