Tony's Pizza Napoletana
If a pizzeria can say that it has the nine time pizza making world champion on staff (I have no idea how this competition works or who judges it), the menu has to be pretty good. Tony Gemignani is the famous pizza maker, and his restaurant is Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in North Beach (for those who don't know, North Beach is the Little Italy of San Francisco). Plus, Tony's Pizza Napoletana claims on his site that his ingredients are authentic and come from the "World Capital of Pizza", Naples.
The star of the menu is the Pizza Margherita (another prize for Tony: the best pizza Margherita at the 2007 world championships in Naples), although our server brought us several pizzas, and we enjoyed the pizza americana: the Soprano, with mozzarella, meatballs, garlic and oregano. The menu offers more than just pizza, with pasta and other Italian selections, in addition to an extensive list of domestic and imported wine.
I also recommend the cocktails, especially the house special, called the Negroni. Keep in mind that there are no reservations, and since Tony's is in the middle of a weekend hot spot, we simply had to have a few beers nearby, waiting to get a call on our cell phone saying that our table was ready. The wait is well worth it.
